Julia Eleni Stathopoulos
Please know that this is being written by Julia’s dad as she did not have time to complete this page. Many of you know Julia personally but I know others only know her through a friend. Let me tell you a little about our Julia. She is 14 years old, an 8th grader who attends Jay M. Robinson Middle School. She has a strong faith as a Greek Orthodox Christian and derives much peace from her belief in guardian angels and holy saints. If you ask her she may share with you her special experience during her travels to Greece in the Summer of 2006, a remarkable story of her seeing and speaking with a young girl in the presence of her family but only Julia could see this young girl – we can only try to explain it as a spirit from heaven, a guardian angel or saint. It was a life-changing experience for Julia and us.
Julia loves to hang out with friends, play video games (especially Wii), watch movies, draw (wonderful artist), listen to music on her Ipod and watch Panthers football games and Tarheel basketball games (a closet sports nut). She also loves to travel having seen more of the world than I ever will and besides her many travels in the US to the northeast, visiting her mother’s ancestral home in Sandwich, Mass, Cape Cod, Boston, New York, Philadelphia and more, Florida (yes Disney World more than a few times), Houston, Texas (yes, she made us take her to the Super Bowl a few years ago), she has visited her father’s ancestral home in Greece, and also traveled to England, France and Belgium with her grandparents Brown.
Julia has one sister, Christina, two brothers, John and Nicholas, and one dog she madly loves named Buddy (see the picture on this site). By the way, Buddy is very protective of Julia and chases her brother Nicholas whenever he starts a sibling fight. Julia’s sister and brothers have experienced more than most as they have traveled with Julia through her challenges. It has given them a different perspective on life. Julia was born with a rare medical condition known as Freeman Sheldon Syndrome. From birth she has had multiple surgical procedures on her hands, feet and legs and various therapy to strengthen her. Somehow she has managed to play soccer and basketball and cheerlead each year as a Junior Topcat when doctors told her that she would have difficulty walking much less participate in athletics. She now faces her most challenging surgery with spine correction and fusion that she has been helping plan over the past year during her many trips to Chapel Hill. This was inevitable as her “S” spine curve has worsened over the past 3 years. The hurdle Julia has been working on for a number of years is weight gain – this has been a struggle. After her spine surgery was postponed in June and September, we proceeded with another surgical procedure in late August that involved a special line that runs from a vein in her arm into her heart region and she receives a special nutritional formula intravenously 12 hours each day. This ultimately helped Julia reach her goal of 50 pounds. Since late August Julia has gained 20% of her body weight or 10 pounds and she reached a top weight of 52.2 pounds. This gave Julia’s parents and medical team more comfort going forward with the spine surgery.
During her many trips to Chapel Hill this past year, Julia has fallen in love with UNC and says she wants to attend college here. By chance she has met Coach Dean Smith and former Tarheel player Sam Perkins during her visits to UNC. She has her favorite restaurant already picked out – Franklin Street Pizza. She wants her brother John to come to UNC so that they can live together in an apartment. She has it all planned out.
Those who know Julia know that she is an inspiration to her parents, sister, brothers, family and friends. Julia has been fortunate to have very supportive siblings and grandparents, and much love and support from her extended family, cousins and all, godparents, and friends. Through her many trials and tribulations, never has Julia uttered words of self-pity, truly not even once. This helps describe her in a nutshell.
I know Julia will be back to change this page as she begins her recovery but I am glad I had this chance to share with you a few things about a special person.
Dad, November 14, 2007

Hey Julia,
Can’t wait for you to get back home. Your dad promised me that he is going to bring you and Nicholas up to my house so we can go fishing and tubing. He said something about using Nicholas as bait. Not sure what he meant by that. I am glad you are at Chapel Hill because it’s the best school in the Carolina’s. Remember there is only one Carolina and it’s in Chapel Hill. Give your Dad and Mom a Go Heels for me.
talk to you soon

Hey Julia!
If you don’t remeber I met you in Philedelphia when we were like 2 or 3. When my mom found this page I was so excited to see what you looked like. We could seriously be twins! If you haven’t caught on I have FSS too. I just like to check my bases to make sure everyone knows what I’m talking about. Anyway I have to hurry… the bus will be here any minute. Best Wishes and I’ll keep you in my prayers!

Hello Julia,
Thank you for giving me an opportunity to add my note of encouragement to the growing number of messages on your blog. I am a friend of your parents, and I remember seeing you for the first time when you were only 1 day old. You were a beautiful baby, and you have grown even more beautiful every year. Your challenges have been and continue to be very great, and yet your gracefulness does not falter. Your life is an inspiring and interesting story, and you have helped people by sharing it. I hope my prayers, and those of many, many others–I dare say continuous–for you will give you help when you need it in the days ahead. Sincerely, Julie Griggs

Karlie Ebersole | November 17, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Julia,
I wanted to let you know that I have been checking this more than once a day to keep up to date on how well you are doing. I don’t know when you’ll read this because when I was in the hospital I had a computer that I could use as I sat in my bed (kind of like the adjustable tv stands at most hospitals) and I didn’t use it but once which was on the last day because of how uncomfortable I was. Anyway to get to the point, I wanted to let you know I kinda started my own page like yours to show you a recent picture of me since I’ve now seen so many of you. It is at http://www.karliesblog.wordpress.com and although there isn’t much on it I atleast have the about me section filled out and I have two pictures of myself that I put on there as I was creating the page. Anyway, I am so excited to get to know you better now that I have learned that you are a good artist and I read the poem that you wrote. I write poetry everyday along with songs and I absolutely love art! I you go to my page you can read more but for now I will keep you in my prayers and wish you the best.
TTYS (talk to you someday… lol) ,
Karlie

Still goodluck with your recovery and i can’t wait to hear from you when you are out of the hospital and this whole thing is just a blur in your mind (i can’t even remember being in ICU and trying to communicate with my parents. but i did). I’ve noticed that you have a lot of friends that seem to care about you and that is the best thing you can have at our age.
BEST WISHES (again)

This is me Karlie writing to you once again and I don’t blame you if you find me an annoyance. I just wanted to say that I am very happy for you that you are beginning to heal more and say that it was SWEET how you got a message from the Tarheels basketball team. I bet that really brightened up your day not to mention your week. I think all of our prayers are finally being answered and you are going to be home very soon. I hope that you get better and you will finally get your mashed potatoes and gravy. Yumm!! lets just hope that the potatoes and gravy are one of the better tasting items on the hospital menu, unlike the plastic toast… lol.

Julia,
I’d be more than happy to give you a tour!
You do not know me, but i was reading an update on your page in regards to Micah who is staying down the hall from you. A girl I go to church with is having a hard time because of Micah’s critical condition, and i wanted to find out how he was so i can do my best to comfort her. Then i found myself reading your entire journal. I just wanted you to know, I’m a freshman at Carolina, (that in itself caught my attention! good for you loving the heels! you chose the right team!) and i love it and UNC is definitely the place to be, in all aspects of life. But, I used to work at a Therapeutic Horseback Riding Ranch outside of Concord called Wings of Eagles Ranch, and there was a girl there that had your same condition. You seem like such a remarkable and inspiring girl! I know you will be just fine and i wish you the best! Work hard, and i just know that you’ll be at UNC in 4 years

Hi Julia,
You don’t know me, but I’m the 6th grade guidance counselor at Jay Robinson. I just moved to Charlotte 4 months ago from NYC. I heard about you and your family and wanted to tell you that you are in my prayers. I’m Greek as well and I went to church yesterday (Holy Trinity). Hey Julia!
I am so glad to see that you are up and running… (well maybe not running)! But anyway, it is great to see how fast you are improving!
The other night, i think it was Saturday, i was outside and i looked at the sky. In the middle of the big grey mess of clouds was a little patch of carolina blue sky. It reminded me of you in the way that throughout this whole ordeal, there is always a positive looking place, or refuge, that is in the distance, but not out of reach. A little while later, the patch got bigger, which could symbolize how you will soon be much better and able to come home. I don’t know if that made any sense, but when i saw that i thought of you so i wanted to say it.
Get well soon! Lots of love, Annie

Julia the whole family has been following your progress and are so happy that you are finally able to go home. Julia, you do not know me but I heard about your amazing story from your older sister. My son is suffering from Neuroblastoma, a rare cancer in children, and he is only 3 yrs. old. From reading your story you gave me hope that with strength, faith in God, and the will to live, all things are possible. I am encouraged by your story, and my family and I will pray for you every day! Keep up the fight and God bless you all.

Thank you Mr. Pournaras. My faith, my family and hope all encourage me each day. I have been blessed with a great mother and father, and they love and support me more than I could ever have wished for. I hope God blesses your son and heals him. Please let me know how he is doing. I leave tomorrow for UNC children’s hospital for a surgery that I will have on my left foot this Tuesday. I hope to be back in Charlotte by the end of the week and will have a cast and therapy for about two months.
God bless you and your family.
